Manchester United were touring the United States with an extra air of superiority on Thursday after Forbes confirmed the Barclays Premier League champions as the world's most valuable sports team.
While Sir Alex Ferguson's team easily dominated MLS team New England Revolution as expected in their exhibition game, the magazine's annual list confirmed that, off the field, the football giants are also outperforming the financial titans of North American sports.
United, whose success is rooted in its worldwide appeal and industry-high sponsorship deals, have an estimated value of $1.87 billion, placing them ahead of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys ($1.81 billion) and MLB's New York Yankees ($1.7 billion).
Washington Redskins, the NFL's most profitable team over the past decade, ranked fourth overall with a value of $1.55 billion, ahead of Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid ($1.45 billion).
Manchester United's owner, the Glazer family, was again represented on the list in 18th place, with its Tampa Bay Buccaneers valued at $1.03 billion. All 32 NFL teams made it into Forbes' top 50.
Eight soccer teams and six Major League Baseball teams filled out the list, along with two NBA teams and two Formula One racing teams.
